I couldn't believe that we saved over $60,000 on our new home! Sometimes it still feels like a dream even though my family has been living in this house for several years now.
But I'm getting a little ahead of myself here. So let me take a deep breath … OK, done. Now let's continue, but from the beginning this time.
My name is Bryant Clark. Several years ago my wife, Montina, and I set out to build our first new home. Neither of us had any prior construction experience. We had no building experience, period. We didn't even know where to begin. And we weren't sure where it would end.
We knew the building plans were located in our local do-it-yourself center, and we studied them for weeks. Finally, we bought a beautiful four-bedroom house plan with lots of square footage and character. But what was next?
Well you'll think, "Now you have the plan get the land." So we bought a piece of property with the intentions to build one year later. So far, so good. Then we began looking for books that would guide us step by step through the home-building process. Results? We couldn't find any.
We then asked our banker if he had information on how to build a new home. Negative. Finally, we went to our friends. They thought we were crazy for even thinking of building a new home on our own! Well, what are friends for?
To our total amazement, we couldn't find any information in one place that will take the novice through the home building process.
"It was not like some general contractors had come together and decided, "Let's give away all our secrets so some home builders can save tens of thousands of dollars." Huh! Not at all …

Sure, there were books on how to do your own electrical work, plumbing, drywall and on being your own contractor. And there were lots of specialized books for different trades. But not one book guided readers step by step through the home-building process.

The only option we had left was to do our own research.
We began talking to others who'd gone through (or were in the process of) building a new home. Each person gave us moneysaving tips they'd discovered along the way. Some were small in scope. Others were huge!
But the research paid off. We began to understand why there weren't any books available on the subject of how to build a new home. Contractors and new home builders aren't willing to explain the ease ...
